Improve UI behaviour.

In particular, switching between over and scroll works better, and
there is some status displayed when idle (by itself when in scroll
mode, to the right of the estimate in over mode).  The status gives the
timestamp of the last estimate, the interval between estimates, a sync
indication if sync, and an over/scroll indication.

Also, before the first sample and before the second sample get
distinctive displays.
