Fix various bugs in IEEE floating-point number conversion.

Now is believed to convert all finite numbers, including denormalized.
Infinities and NaNs I'm not sure what to do about; source text like
"Inf" or "NaN" is a normal identifier, not a preprocessing number.
Overlarge normals could perhaps turn into infinities, but I don't like
doing that, not even noisily.
